What is a halving?
A halving cuts the number of new coins that miners receive for each block in half. It is written into the coin's code and happens after a fixed number of blocks, not on a fixed date:

Both coins therefore halve roughly every four years. Because blocks are sometimes a bit faster or slower than the target, the exact day is only an estimate until the block is actually mined.
How the countdown is calculated
- Blocks left = next halving block − current block height
- Time left ≈ blocks left × target block time (10 minutes for Bitcoin, 2.5 minutes for Litecoin)
- Estimated date = now + time left
